What is PRP?
PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma is a treatment method that uses your own blood to help promote hair growth and fight against hair loss. Whether genetic, a result of stress, medical conditions or even due to bad hair care, hair loss is a big concern amongst many men and women. Luckily, with techniques such as PRP, it is getting much easier to fight against hair loss.
How does the PRP procedure work?
Our blood contains a mixture of plasma, platelets, red and white blood cells. Platelets are small cells that contain clotting and growth factors that are stimulated during the healing process. During the PRP procedure, a patient’s own blood is drawn out and centrifuged so that platelet rich plasma is collected. This platelet rich plasma contains significantly more platelets than blood and as it contains important growth factors, it is injected into the scalp to help stimulate hair growth and to help with restoration following hair restoration surgery.
Who can benefit from PRP?
Male pattern baldness – PRP can help to trigger the re-growth process in men that are suffering from the thinning of the hair on the top of the scalp, as well as a receding hairline. It promotes the body’s own ability to respond to hair follicles that are failing to function properly. Evidence suggests that PRP helps to reinvigorate dormant hair follicles, stimulating new growth. PRP can also be used in treating women suffering from similar hair loss.
Strengthening transplanted hair – After a hair transplant procedure, it is normal for some transplanted hairs to fall out as the follicle fails to function. PRP helps to aid recovery, triggering a superior healing process and as a result, the hairs are strengthened.
Preventing hair loss – As well as helping to trigger regrowth of hair, PRP can also help to prevent hair loss in people that are worried that they are losing their hair. By reinvigorating hair follicles, strengthening existing hairs and stimulating growth, PRP helps to fight against hair loss.
