The dangers of going abroad when getting a hair transplant
Hair transplants are becoming an increasingly popular solution for those struggling with hair loss. Many are considering the possibility of getting their procedure done in a foreign country (such as Turkey) in order to save money. Hair transplants can be much cheaper abroad but be warned, going abroad to get your hair transplant can pose many serious dangers. This article will look at some of the most important points.
A) Less Rigorous Training.
Many other countries have lower standards on surgeon certification and patient safety than in the UK. That's not to say that these countries do not have highly skilled and perfectly ethical doctors, but it does mean they will contain a higher proportion of surgeons whose lack of skill and care which may pose a severe risk to your long-term health. You could develop infection, or receive permanent injury and disfigurement or worse.
B) Lower Safety and Cleanliness Standards.
Safety regulation is often not as stringent in other countries. The hospitals can be a of a lower standard and have worse patient outcomes, meaning any secondary conditions (‘complications’) may not be treated well either. Oversight of hospitals is also often less strict, meaning that a patient sometimes receives a substandard service. A more lax approach to cleanliness and safety increases your risk of developing other complications during your stay.
C) Difficulties with Litigation.
When receiving an operation in the UK, you can have the peace of mind of knowing that any cosmetic surgeon you use will be held to account for any mishaps that result from their negligence. Litigation against such a surgeon will always be possible in the UK. In another country, it may not be so easy for you to take effective legal action against a surgeon or medical organisation that has been negligent, especially if you do not speak the local language, or if the legal system is not rigorous enough. It is also possible that as a foreign visitor you may not have the same rights as a local.
D) Discovering Your Mistake Too Late.
With hair transplants, it can take some time for the postive effects of the operation to begin showing. This means that you won't know if the budget operation that you travelled all that way to receive was worth the risk. If you do find out after several months that the operation has not produced satisfying results, travelling back to the foreign country where you received the operation may be prohibitively expensive, or seem not worth the hassle. Compare this with the UK clinics which will often check up on you to see how happy you are with the results, and be much easier to take remedial action against if needed.
E) Don't Take the Risk.
Unless you have done intense research, and are entirely sure that a foreign doctor or clinic is applying rigorous standards and getting top results, it is unwise to risk your health, appearance and even life by travelling abroad for a hair transplant operation.
