The hair is made up of fast-growing cells. At any given time, there are close to 120,000 hair roots growing on a human scalp. This growth must be supported by protein and other essential nutrients. Low iron and calorie intake negatively impact hair follicles. Most people on a weight loss program tend to switch to vegetarian diets which have low calories. Most people limit their protein intake when on a weight loss program. While this might be useful in weight loss, it has negative implications on healthy hair. Since hair is not a vital organ in the body, the distribution of essential nutrients is prioritised to other organs. Sustained hair growth calls for a balanced diet in the right amounts to enable the nourishment of non-vital organs. It is a delicate balancing act to achieve weight loss while at the same time avoid losing hair, but there is a safe and balanced way to do it. Consume adequate amounts of protein
Consume adequate amounts of lean protein including fish and chicken to help avoid hair from thinning. Protein intake varies with activity levels and individual factors including weight. For instance, when one is to spend a day indoors, their calorie intake would be different from when they are to spend a day exercising.
Feed on a balanced diet
Incorporate vegetables, whole grains, and fruits into the diet. A balanced diet is a key to promoting general health in the body by enhancing the absorption of trace minerals. Iron deficiency is a significant contributor to hair loss and can result from the exclusion of whole grain in the diet. Fruits and vegetables are rich in zinc and vitamins A, C, and E which play a vital part in the growth of hair. Undoubtedly, there is a need for one to limit their calorie intake, but this should not be to the extreme. The body also requires energy for hair to grow.
Use of nutritional supplements
When on weight loss program and where diet is limited, one should use nutritional supplements including multivitamins. Dietary supplements contain the recommended daily intake of minerals and vitamins for healthy hair.
Weight loss should be gradual
One should evaluate their weight loss program from time to time and not strive to get instant results since this will expose them to the risk of hair loss. Guidelines for safely losing weight state that you should aim to lose a gradual and sustained amount rather than planning to shed loads by in effect, starving yourself.
